I-91 North Bridge Work Complete; Traffic Flowing Again

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WGGB) — Traffic is moving again after emergency bridge work closed down part of I-91 northbound in Northampton.

Mass. State Police say that around 1:45 p.m., the work, which was just before Exit 18 northbound, has been completed. They adds all lanes have reopened and traffic is moving again.

Around 6:00 a.m. Friday, crews from MassDOT began emergency work on that bridge, which crosses over Island Road in Northampton

MassDOT spokesperson Mike Verseckes says that a joint between the bridge deck and the bridge abutment needed immediate repairs “to address portions of the concrete and asphalt that had broken up.”

“In the past several weeks, the fluctuation in the temperature caused snow and ice to melt, seep into cracks, freeze again, and expand the size of cracks. An area where this type of joint exists is a natural place for water to seep in to and exacerbate the issue,” Verseckes explains.
