Falcons fall to Pirates in shootout
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Andy Miele’s score on the fifth attempt in a shootout propelled Portland past Springfield, 4-3, for the team’s first win against the Falcons this season.
Springfield continued their strong start in the opening frames. After falling behind 2-1 in the first period, Max Chaput’s 10th goal of the season knotted the contest at two a piece with 12:32 remaining in the period. Moments later, Jack Skille’s power play goal would give the home team a 3-2 edge heading into the first intermission.
The Pirates would respond in the second. Having the power play advantage, Chris Brown’s eighth goal of 2014 deadlocked the game at three.
After a scoreless third period and overtime, Portland would strike first in the shootout on Tobias Reider’s first attempt. Springfield would be stonewalled in their first two tries until Skille evened things up. Both teams would blank until Miele’s successful attempt. Mark Visentin knocked down Darrell Boyce’s last try, sealing the victory for the visitors.
Springfield (28-10-1-4) returns to the ice Friday at Worcester against the Sharks at 7:30.
