Springfield Rescue Mission Holds “Coldest Day of the Year 5K”
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — The Springfield Rescue Mission held their “Coldest Day of the Year 5K” this afternoon.
Though it wasn’t the coldest day of the year, it was very chilly.
Organizers say they got a number of calls this morning asking if they were really going to hold the race today.
“We’re holding it because we want to bring awareness to what homelessness and what homelessness on the street in the winter is actually like. We want to walk a mile, or three, in their shoes,” said Julie Barnes, Community Development Assistant for the Springfield Rescue Mission.
Participants ran from The Mission on bliss street to their emergency shelter on Taylor Street.
There they were given “compassion cards” to invite anyone they might see on their way back who might be in need of help, inviting them to a make use of the Rescue Mission’s services.
