Closing Arguments Heard in Cara Rintala Re-Trial

Cara Rintala

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WGGB) –Closing arguments were heard today in the re-trial of Cara Rintala, emotions ran high as the defense made a key testimonial decision.

Today Cara Rintala chose not to testify in her own retrial. When the judge asked her if she understood the decision, she started to cry.

Rintala is accused of killing her wife, Annamarie Cochrane Rintala in their Granby home back in March 2010.

The first trial against her ended in a hung jury last year.

Today, lawyers for both the prosecution and defense left the jury with a lot to consider. “The Commonwealth cannot prove that Cara Rintala committed this murder because she did not commit this murder. I ask you to find her not guilty,” said Ritnala’s lawyer, David Hoose.

“Cara Rintala is guilty of murdering her wife. Not because I say so, but because the evidence and your common sense says so,” Steve Gagne First Assistant District Attorney stated.

The jury broke for a recess this afternoon, the judge finished charging the jury at 4 pm.

At this point it’s unclear if the jury will begin deliberating today, but will likely start tomorrow morning.

ABC40 will continue to follow the story and have the latest information as it becomes available.
