U.S. to Send Largest-Ever Team to Sochi Olympics
(WGGB) — The contingent of Olympians donning the badge of Team USA in 2014 will be the largest to ever travel to the winter games.
The United States is sending 230 athletes to the 2014 Sochi Olympics beginning February 6th. The 125 men and 105 women compromise the largest representation for any nation in the history of the Winter Olympics.
The squad hopes to top their all-time best 37 medals in 2010, which included 9 gold medals.
Despite plenty of promising youth, the U.S. will be without some of its big-name stars, after injuries to skier Lindsay Vonn and figure skater Evan Lysacek. While five-time Olympic medalist Shani Davis is one of Team USA’s most promising participants, the United States’ most decorated Winter Olympian ever, Apolo Anton Ohno, has retired.
Team USA will have an athlete in all 7 sports, across 15 disciplines.
The U.S. squad includes several competitors who hail from Massachusetts, including Kacey Bellamy from Westfield, who will compete for a second time with the USA Women’s Olympic Hockey team.
