Medical Marijuana Company Looks at Greenfield
(GREENFIELD, Mass.) (WGGB)–Medical marijuana is coming to Massachusetts and efforts continue to set up dispensaries.
Two Western Massachusetts counties were shut off when the first round of licenses were awarded.
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health recently issued 20 licenses for medical marijuana dispensaries but none for Franklin, or Berkshire counties in Western Massachusetts.
The department invited eight additional applicants to reapply.
The medical marijuana company Patriot Care Corporation has expressed an interest in opening a dispensary in the Franklin County community of Greenfield.
Residents we spoke with were generally in favor,”It can be very beneficial to people who are receiving cancer treatments, people who experience chronic pain,” says Susan Maloney of Greenfield.
Tom Costello also weighed in,” I don’t see a problem with it as long as it’s used responsibly and they make sure it’s being watched,” says Costello.
Patriot Care representatives recently met with Mayor William Martin,”They are running and managing successful dispensaries in other states, as well as Washington,DC and they seem to have a good history,” says Mayor Martin.
Martin says Greenfield is an appropriate site for a medical marijuana dispensary,”I would be in favor of the dispensary in Greenfield, it’s a very logical choice, Greenfield’s the center of the county,” says Mayor Martin.
Greenfield Police Chief Robert Haigh is also ok with a medical marijuana facility in town,”With the legalization of medical marijuana and the benefits it may have for somebody who needs it, I’m not a doctor so who am I to say you shouldn’t have the best treatment possible,” says Chief Haigh.
