SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Police have identified the victim of a deadly crash from Wednesday.

Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney says that 50-year-old Jeffrey Merigian of Hampden was killed after the crash, which occurred around 12:45 a.m. Wednesday.

Delaney says that when officers arrived on the scene, they found a 2013 Cadillac CTS near Siano’s Restaurant suffering from heavy front end damage.

Because of downed power lines, rescue crews weren’t able to get to Merigian right away. Once they were able to get him, he was pronounced dead on the scene.

Delaney says that the preliminary investigation indicates that speed was a factor in the crash, but the investigation remains ongoing.
