Westfield’s Kacey Bellamy, USA Women’s Hockey Take Silver After OT Loss to Canada

(WGGB) — Westfield’s Kacey Bellamy and the U.S. Women’s Hockey team came up short Thursday in a hard-fought game against Canada, and head home with a silver medal.

After a scoreless first period, USA team captain Meghan Duggan (Danvers, Mass.) scored the games first goal, and put USA up 1-0 in the second.

USA forward Alex Carpenter (North Reading, Mass.) would then tip in a feed from Hillary Knight (Sun Valley, Idaho) early in the third period to put Team USA up 2-0.

USA would hold that lead until late in the third, when Canada scored two goals with just over three minutes left in the game, and tied the match-up at 2-2 and forced overtime.

Canada’s Marie-Philip Poulin would get a goal past USA goalie Jesse Vetter in overtime for the 3-2 win.

Canada takes home the gold medal, while Team USA takes the silver. Switzerland beat Sweden 4-3 to win the the bronze in a game played earlier in the day.

Throughout the Olympics, Bellamy had one goal, one assist, and seven shots on goal.

Canada’s women’s hockey team has now gold in four consecutive Winter Olympics.
