UMass Boosts Tourney Resume In Win Over VCU
AMHERST, Mass. (WGGB) — Chaz Williams logged a game-high 20 points while shooting a perfect eight for eight from the free throw line and Derrick Gordon chipped in with 16 points of his own as UMass topped VCU 80-75 at the Mullins Center on Friday.
In what many considered to be the most anticipated game in Amherst since the mid-1990’s – a game that sold out nearly two months ago – the two conference rivals did not disappoint.
After a enduring a two for 17 shooting stretch midway though the first half, the Minutemen managed a way to cut a nine point deficit to five at the break.
In a second half that featured five lead changes and the largest lead no greater than five, Trey Davis gave UMass a 70-68 edge with a steal and layup with 4:04 remaining. They would not surrender the lead from there.
VCU cut a five-point deficit to three with an opportunity to tie, however, Briante Weber would lose the handle of the basketball, ultimately sealing the victory for the home team.
Treveon Graham lead the Rams with 19 point and eight rebounds. UMass improves to 21-5 and 8-4 in conference play while VCU drops to 20-7 and 8-4 in the Atlantic 10.
