UMass Hockey Falls to No. 12 Providence 2-1 on Senior Night

40-Umass logoAMHERST (WGGB) — In their last regular season home game, the seniors on the UMass Men’s Hockey team had to deal with a top-15 team in the Providence Friars.

Despite an emotional effort, the Minutemen fell to the No. 12 Friars 2-1 on Senior Night.

It was a senior who netted the only goal for UMass. Colin Shea scored for the Minutemen, making it his first game of the season during his final showing at the Mullins Center.

Providence’s Brandon Tanev got the Friars out to an early lead in the first, before Mark Jankowski added a second to give Providence a 2-0 lead.

Shea’s goal would cut the lead in half, but the Minutemen failed to find the equalizer.

But the Minutemen had their chances. They finished with a 26-25 shot advantage, but both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play.

UMass will rest during a bye in the final week of their season, while they wait to see who they’ll play in the first round of the Hockey East Tournament on the weekend of March 7th and 8th.
