Northampton Police received the call around 7:00 p.m. and responded to find a pontoon-style boat overturned in the area where many vessels are docked for the winter. However, police say that boat had been overturned for several days, and was leaking fuel into the marina.
Police do not believe anyone is responsible, but rather that the melting snow redistributed the weight, causing the vessel to tip over.
Police released absorbent pads into the water in an attempt to soak of as much of the spilled gasoline as they could.
They have called in the State Department of Environmental Protection to further handle the spill. They did not indicate what potential damage could come from the leaking gasoline, or how far it may have spread.
Northampton Police have cleared the scene, but say they, and State officials, will return to the scene to follow up on Monday morning.
