Longmeadow, East Longmeadow Advance in DIII Hockey Tourney
WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Four different goal scorers found the back of the net and goalie Omar Natour’s late save helped Longmeadow stave off a late Ludlow rally to win 4-3 and advance in the Division III tournament at Olympia Ice Center on Tuesday.
After a tie and a victory in the first two meetings, No. 3 Longmeadow used a dominant first two frames to build a much-needed cushion in order to hold off the Lions.
After jumping out to a 4-1 lead following leading scorer Drew Kelleher’s goal, Ludlow responded three minutes later with Jason Wegiel’s score. Wegiel would add another score with 2:36 remaining to bring the contest in reach.
Ludlow would have one last attempt to tie the game inside of two minutes but Natour’s last of his 33 saves proved to be the difference.
Following the Lancers’ victory, East Longmeadow’s high-powered offense proved to be too much for the young Minnechaug Falcons en route to a 6-4 victory.
Joe Santaniello and Ben Wosky each added a pair of goals for the Spartans. Dominic Falvo and Mike Diotaveli connected on scores for the Falcons.
