fire-house 2

AMHERST, Mass. (WGGB) — Three people are displaced after a fire broke out in their home in Amherst Friday night.

The call came in for the fire just after 8:00 PM for a fire in the rear of a home at 25 Merrick Circle. Initially the fire was deemed a one-alarm, but quickly turned into a two-alarm blaze which started in the kitchen area. No one was home when the fire began.

Smoke could be seen coming from the rear of the house, but the fire was put out quickly. The house sustained quite a bit of smoke, fire and water damage. Amherst Fire Chief Thomas Nelson said the first floor of the home will most likely need to be gutted.

No injuries were reported, but the residents did lose their cat.

Several different fire departments responded to help put out the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it is not considered suspicious.
