Above the Rim: Playoff Special – Northampton, Westside Advance

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — A day after the girls basketball squads took center stage, Friday night belonged to the boys.

In Division I, rivals West Springfield and Agawam clashed in the final game at Doris Haynes Gymnasium on the campus of West Springfield High School.

After jumping out to an 17-point lead midway through the third quarter, the Terriers appeared to be in control of the visiting Brownies. Tyler Desrosiers responded, however, logging 12 points in the second half including a three to cut the deficit to 60-57 inside of two minutes remaining. He finished with 18 points.

After regaining a four-point lead, Kail Hastings found big man Temitope Bailey streaking on an inbounds pass underneath the basket to put the Terriers up six, a lead they would not relinquish en route to a 65-57 victory.

Jake Ross’ 12 points and eight assists powered a 22-3 run to open the game and lead Northampton past Cathedral, 54-36. They will meet West Springfield Tuesday at American International College.

At Holyoke High School, Leominster advanced past the home team, 56-52. Tanner Jakola added 16 points for Leominster. Justin White led the Knights with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Leominster will face top-seeded Putnam on Tuesday at American International College.
