Central, Northampton To Meet For Girls’ DI Crown

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Coming into the tournament, all the hype surrounded the potential meeting between the favorite Central and the high-powered offense of Northampton for the Division I championship. For the third time this season, Central and Northampton will clash but this time it will be for the right to call themselves ‘Western Mass champions’.

Anna Walther paced the Blue Devils with a game-high 20 points in their 59-28 drubbing of Holyoke, holding the Knights to single-digit scoring in every quarter tonight at American International College

In the latter game of the double-header, Central responded from their near upset scare from Shepherd Hill and resembled more so the team that garnered the top-seed in the tournament. Kendra Hicks added 21 points and 10 rebounds with her second straight double-double to lead the Golden Eagles past West Springfield, 56-37.

Central and Northampton split each of their two meetings this season. On January 28 in Northampton, the Blue Devils handed the Golden Eagles their first in-state loss in a 63-46 rout led by Walther’s 24 points.

On February 14 in Springfield, Central rallied from a second-half deficit to edge Northampton and even the season series at one a piece.

The two teams will battle for the crown Thursday at 6 at Curry Hicks Cage on the campus of UMass.
