Congressman Kennedy Tours UMass STEM Diversity Institute

Joseph Kennedy III

AMHERST, Mass. (WGGB) — UMass is not only a teaching college, it’s also one of the country’s top research institutions as well.

Monday, Mass. Congressman Joseph Kennedy got a look at the university’s recently completed Life Science Laboratory.

It is home to the STEM Diversity Institute. It focuses on expanding opportunities for under-represented minorities and women in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Kennedy was impressed by what he saw, saying, “It really shows what happens when you match talent to potential and possibilities. UMass Amherst deserves a tremendous amount of credit for providing the infrastructure and the motivation and support system though their professors and really challenge some kids and get them not only excited about learning but what’s going to come next in their careers.”

Kennedy chairs the Governor’s STEM Advisory Council.
