Above The Rim: Playoffs Edition – Putnam, West Springfield To Battle for DI Title

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Putnam’s Jonathan Garcia’s four points, two steals and blocked shot over a two minute span helped in spearheading a 10-2 rally to help the Beavers quiet a Leominster rally en route to a 66-47 win.

After holding the Beavers to seven third quarter points cutting an 18-point deficit down to 13, Jarrell Addo’s layup and foul brought the Blue Devils within 10 early in the fourth quarter.

Garcia would spark the Beavers from there. After a transition layup extending the lead back to 12, Garcia would best Leominster’s Jake Allain on two straight possessions with a steal and blocked shots leading to easy baskets on the other end and ultimately putting the game out of reach.

Garcia finished with 11 points, four steals, and three blocks. David Murrell added a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Addo’s 15 points lead Leominster.

Nearly three weeks after dropping 40 on West Springfield in a loss, Northampton’s Jake Ross was held in check by the Terriers in a 59-44 victory for the two-seed in the tournament.

Ross finished with 17 points, surpassing 1,000 points for his career.

Kevawn Lord lead West Springfield with 17 points, 11 of them coming from the free throw as West Springfield advances to meet Putnam on Friday at Curry Hicks Cage.

In Division IV action, Smith Academy’s Keith Natale and his buzzer-beating three pointer helped in leading the Falcons past Granby, 73-70 to advance to face Quabog for the Division IV title on Saturday at Curry Hicks Cage. Natale finished with 34 points and five three pointers while Derek McMahon logged 27 points of his own. Corey Baker anchored Granby with his 27 points.
