Ash Wednesday Marked Across Western Mass.
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Today is Ash Wednesday and the official beginning of Lent, the 40-day period of preparation for Easter Sunday.
Many local Catholics went to St. Michael’s Cathedral in Springfield to have ashes placed on their forehead in the shape of a cross.
The cross is a reminder of human mortality.
Many people also give or sacrifice something they love for the 40 days as a sort of self-penance.
Easter Sunday is April 20.
