SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — The Pioneer Valley Chapter of the Red Cross announces their 2014 Hometown Heroes.

This year, it’s honoring 7 people from Springfield, Agawam, Ludlow, and the surrounding area.

These men and women are honored for performing courageous, kind and unselfish acts in time of emergency, like one of last year’s hometown heroes, who was on hand today to explain her story.

“We were caught in a situation myself and my partner where a lot of gases has accumulated in an attic. The gases themselves ended up igniting all at once,” says Rebecca Boutin, a 2013 Hometown Hero.

Boutin ended up having to help rescue her partner.

The annual event began as a way to honor the heroes of 9/11 and helps support the Red Cross mission of helping people prevent, respond and prepare for emergencies.

The Hometown Heroes Breakfast will be held March 27 at the MassMutual Center.
