Above the Rim: Playoff Special – Putnam advances to State Finals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — In the last of a quadruple-header at the MassMutual Center, David Murrell’s 23 points and 13 rebounds and Jonathan Garcia’s 11 points and four steals spearheaded Putnam’s 77-51 route of St. John’s to advance the Beavers to the Division I state championship Saturday against Central Catholic at the DCU Center in Worcester.

Putnam moves to 24-0 and in search of its second consecutive state title.

The Division I girls did not fair as well as Central fell at the hands of Worcester Academy, 63-51. The Gray Ghosts will clash against Braintree for the crown.

In Division II, Longmeadow earned a split at Springfield Central High School. In the first contest, Taj Lewis anchored the Lancers in a 58-49 victory over Nashoba. Longmeadow will take on Arlington-Catholic for the girls championship.

The boys would falter against upstart Concord-Carlise representing Central Mass, 65-55.

In the earlier Division III games at MassMutual Center, Sabis boys’ rally fell just short in their defeat to Tyngsboro, 61-51.

Hoosac Valley girls were able to stave off a vicious comeback attempt against Bellingham and hold on for a 54-52 victory.
