Scandal: Who Got Shot?
Jeff Perry and Kerry Washington
Thursday’s episode of Scandal turned shockingly deadly, though the complete body count seemingly won’t be revealed until next week.
With the debate quickly approaching, David Rosen (Josh Malina) turned to OPA with the truth that Cyrus (Jeff Perry) and Mellie (Bellamy Young) helped Sally (Kate Burton) cover up her husband’s murder. (Fun fact: All three presidential candidates are murderers!) But Olivia wants to stay out of all that shady business since this election was supposed to be done differently, ethically.
However, she’s not able to stay out of the fray for long when Sally decides, for religious reasons, that she wants to go public with the truth during the debate. That forces Olivia to beg Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) to throw the debate in order to give Sally a sign from God — we’re not kidding — so she won’t reveal her misdeeds.
But just in case that didn’t work out, Jake (Scott Foley) enlists Tom (Brian Letscher) to be prepared to kill Sally if she decides to tell the truth, which she almost does before Fitz quickly interjects and saves the day. He’s even got the little curl on his forehead! Shall we just call him Superman already? Wait, Superman’s not a murderer. (We choose to ignore Man of Steel.)
You know who is a murderer? Jake! After Cyrus discovers the bug planted in his office by James (Dan Bucatinsky), Cyrus confronts his husband in a very emotional way that kind of spelled, “I need to tell you I love you because you’re about to die.” James is then tricked into meeting with David, that White House reporter and the woman who originally discovered the call that implicates Cyrus and Sally after Jake reviews the files on the Langston murder that he had new B613 member Quinn (Katie Lowes) steal from OPA. It’s not long before they realize they were duped into meeting up, but the two women are quickly dispatched by Jake, who then points his gun at both James and David before firing. But who did he shoot? The show cuts to black before we see the bullet claim its victim.
Our best guess? It’s James. Cyrus’ apology earlier totally reeked of a last chance to tell his husband he loved him. A farewell if you will. Plus: Throughout the episode, we saw Jake inducting someone into B613 and it doesn’t seem like it’s Quinn. He was using the power of fear on this person, which leads us to believe that he’s speaking to David, inducting him into the Black Ops division as their own mole in the U.S. District Attorney’s office. Though it may seem shocking to think Scandal would kill off an Emmy winner in Bucatinsky, it’s not above Shonda Rhimes to really gut-punch the audience. Or, here’s another theory: neither of them are really dead, only seriously injured, and this is one big red herring. What do you think?
Scandal airs Thursdays at 10/9c on ABC.
