Cathedral falls in Super 8 semis; Wahconah, Westfield lose in states
LOWELL, Mass. (WGGB) — An improbable 2014 campaign for Cathedral hockey came to an end Thursday, falling to reigning champion Malden Catholic, 3-1, in the Super 8 semifinals. The Panthers topped Malden Catholic, 5-2, last month to close out the regular season and end the year with a 17-3-5 mark.
The three-time defending champion Lancers handily outshot the Panthers 36-21 in the victory. Goalie Keith Petruzzelli netted 33 saves in the 36 attempts and Riley Prattson provided the lone goal for Cathedral.
In the Division III state semifinals, Central Mass representative Shrewsbury handled Westfield, 6-0. Sean Halice and Jack Quinvilan recorded a goal and two assists each for the Colonials. Goalie Matt Blascak recorded 29 saves.
North Middlesex’s high-powered offense proved to be too much for Wahconah, playing in their first state tournament, in a 12-0 rout in the Division III-A finals. Danny McNamara powered the Patriots with four goals and two assists. Wahconah was the first Berkshire County team to represent Western Mass in a state title game since Pittsfield in 1990.
