Springfield House Fire Displaces 18 People

SPRINGFIELD (WGGB) — Over a dozen people, including five children, are without a home, after a large fire destroyed a Springfield property Wednesday morning.

The flames broke out at the two-family home on 29 Vinton Street, near Liberty Street shortly after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Crews battled the flames for more than an hour. Heavy flames and billowing smoke could be seen coming from the home.

Aide to the Springfield Fire Commissioner Dennis Leger says the house is now a total loss.

In total, 18 people, including five children, were displaced as a result of the fire.

The Red Cross is assisting those residents with shelter and food.

The neighboring homes suffered significant damage as well. The house to the right of 29 Vinton St., which is only 10 feet away, suffered $25,000 to $30,000 worth of damage.

The house to the left suffered under $5,000 worth of damage.

All of the residents in both of the adjacent homes were evacuated during the height of the flames, but all were able to return to their homes Wednesday morning.

Leger adds that the Springfield Arson and Bomb Squad is investigating the cause of that fire.
