Gambling Commission Agrees to Hear Boston Casino Appeal

By BOB SALSBERG, Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) — State gambling regulators have agreed to consider Boston Mayor Martin Walsh’s proposal to have the city designated as a host community for resort casino proposals in Everett and Revere.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission said Thursday it would schedule a hearing on the matter within two weeks, while also expressing concern that the city’s eleventh hour request could further delay the panel’s schedule for awarding the sole eastern Massachusetts casino license.

Walsh appeared before the commission to argue that Boston deserves host community status — rather than a surrounding community designation — because of the impact the casino projects would have on the quality of life in city neighborhoods.

Host community status would, among other things, allow for binding referendums to be held in Boston on the casinos proposed by Mohegan Sun and Wynn Resorts.
