Chicopee Taxpayers May Pay More for School Rehab Project

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WGGB) — Chicopee taxpayers could be footing the bill for a projected increase in the cost for renovation of the old Chicopee High School.

The building is part of the middle school renovation project.

The projected cost was $38 million, with 80 percent being reimbursed by the state, but officials are finding out they may need more money to complete the project.

“What we found out from the state today…they were warning the city all along that the numbers weren’t as good as they should be and they should be careful in taking additional time and that wasn’t done, so now, unfortunately, the cost to the taxpayer depedning on what the bids come in at may be as high as an additional $3 million dollars on top of what had been approved already,” explains Chicopee Mayor Richard Kos.

Kos says the decisions regarding the funding of the project were made by the previous administration before he took over as mayor.
