Box Office: Divergent Opens Strong; Muppets Flops

Divergent dominated the box office this weekend, earning a whopping $56 million in its debut, Box Office Mojo reports. Though the young adult dystopian adaptation fell short of Twilight‘s and The Hunger Games debuts, its opening is the second-highest in 2014 so far, behind 300: Rise of an Empire, which fell to fourth place with $8.7 million in its third week.

The same could not be said for Muppets Most Wanted, which landed at No. 2 with a disappointing $16.5 million in its first weekend. That’s just a bit more than half of what The Muppets earned when it opened in 2011.

In its second week, Need for Speed landed in sixth place with $7.8 million. The Grand Budapest Hotel, after opening in an additional 200-plus theaters this weekend, rose a spot to No. 7 with $6.7 million.

Rounding out the Top 10 are Non-Stop (No. 8, $6.3 million), The LEGO Movie (No. 9, $4.1 million) and Tyler Perry’s The Single Moms Club (No. 10, $3.1 million).
