40 Force: Hammer Time – Starting the Process


EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WGGB) – After months of being cooped up inside, many of us have looked around our homes and dreamed of renovations.

Whether it’s a spacious sunroom, a new deck or patio, or even just a fresh coat of paint, tonight, our 40 Force is here to help you start to make that dream a reality.

You’ve decided you’re ready to take on a major renovation in your home. You can picture it in your head already.

So now what? We got some advice from the pros.

First, you need to think about your home’s value and what your renovation may do for it, or to it.

“You really need to know where your value is, what you’re putting into your house and making sure that you’re hopefully going to get back the majority of that value when you go to sell your house,” Roger Chapdelaine of Jos. Chapdelaine and Sons told us.

Bill Laplante of Laplante Construction agrees. “You also have to consider the neighborhood that it’s in.  You don’t want to over build for the neighborhood obviously to try and protect the investment and we help the customer with that,” he says.

Once you know how your project will affect your homes value, it’s time to select your contractor.

Obviously, cost is a major factor for many people with this selection. But keep in mind, when it comes to home improvement, you get what you pay for.

“The cost is just a function of the quality of the materials, the cost of the materials and the quality of the workmanship that’s going into the project,” explained Laplante.

And it’s not always about price either. You need to make sure that you and your contractor get along and have a good and open relationship that will last throughout your renovation.

And of course there’s the question: should I just do this myself? Well, that depends.

“My father always told me there’s a lot of people that know what they’re doing and there’s a lot of people who don’t know how to turn a screwdriver. If you’re not used to doing projects on your own, it’s not something that you want to take on,” Chapdelaine told us.

Overall, the experts we spoke to told us it’s imperative that you be careful, understand the specifics of your project, know the materials, know what your timeline is and make sure you’re very familiar with your contract.
