UMass’ Springfield Center Holds Opening Ceremony

UMassseal SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — The University of Massachusetts has scheduled a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new satellite center in downtown Springfield.

A part of the ceremony Monday at the Tower Square Welcome Center, prospective students will be able to register for courses and degree programs before the start of classes Sept. 2.

Those scheduled to speak include system President Robert Caret (kuh-RET), Mayor Domenic Sarno, Amherst campus Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy and trustees Chairman Henry Thomas III.

The satellite center is about 25 miles from the university’s flagship campus in Amherst, which will serve as the lead campus for the satellite center.

The goal of the center is to offer an “affordable public higher education option” for residents of the Springfield area.
