Local Firefighters Return to Boston to Pay Respects to Michael Kennedy

SPRINGFIELD (WGGB) – Local firefighters from across Western Mass are returning to Boston this morning to pay their final respects to Firefighter Michael Kennedy.

Firefighter Kennedy was killed last week, along with Lieutenant Edward Walsh, in that massive fire in Boston’s Back Bay. He will be laid to rest today following a funeral in West Roxbury.

Yesterday, dozens of local firefighters were in attendance at Lieutenant Walsh’s funeral. This morning they boarded a bus once again to do the same for another fallen brother.

“We’re tired today, y’know, it’s an emotional thing,” said local union chief Randy Blake. “I personally didn’t know the firefighters, but it doesn’t matter. The thing is that we go there and show the love and respect … it’s what we do, and how we are.”

More than 10,000 firefighters from all over the country, and even as far as Canada were in attendance for Lieutenant Walsh’s funeral. Union Chief Blake says they expect a similar turnout for Firefighter Kennedy.
