Owner of North Adams Reg. Hospital Files for Bankruptcy
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. (WGGB) — The owners of North Adams Regional Hospital have filed for bankruptcy.
Northern Berkshire Healthcare filed for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy Thursday morning at U.S. Federal Court in Springfield.
The filing comes as the same day a hearing was set to be held in Berkshire County Superior Court.
That hearing, which has now been continued to next Tuesday, was to discuss a move announced last week to have Berkshire Medical Center operate the emergency department at North Adams Regional Hospital.
However, shortly after that announcement, it was found that Berkshire Medical could not do that because of deteriorating conditions at North Adams Regional.
State officials have been working to get those emergency services reopen and hope to do so in the next seven to ten days.
On Thursday, Berkshire Superior Court Judge John Agostini extended a temporary restraining order giving Berkshire Medical Center access to the North Adams hospital building and its medical records.
Berkshire Medical continues to work to re-open the E.R. in North Adams.
Meanwhile those union members at the closed down North Adams Hospital remain optimistic,” I’m hopeful that with our representatives and senators working so hard that the emergency room will open up shortly, I don’t know how long that will be, but we’re also hoping for a full service hospital there,” says Robbin Simonetti, an RN at North Adams Regional Hospital.
Judge Agostini continued Thursday’s hearing to next Tuesday in Hampshire Superior Court in Northampton where he’ll be sitting.
