61st Annual Westfield River Whitewater Races

canoeHUNTINGTON, Mass. (WGGB) — Saturday was the 61st Annual Westfield River Whitewater Races .

Canoes and kayaks raced down the Westfield River from Huntington to Russell.

The novices ran in the morning, and five and twelve mile experts raced this afternoon.

Experts started at the Knightville Dam, which means high river levels didn’t help the racers improve their time.

“Because we have a release from the Knightville Dam, it’s a controlled release. So the level is the same every year. This year is unusual, because they actually had to cut down the release level,” explained Edward Sullivan, the race’s chairman.

The race is the oldest continually run canoe race in the U.S.

Organizers run to clinics a year. For more information on how to participate, you can visit their website.
