Will Glee's Ryan Murphy, Lea Michele Bring Funny Girl Back to Broadway?
Rachel Berry has already earned rave reviews for her performance on Broadway’s Funny Girl revival, but will Lea Michele follow the same path?
“I have the rights to it,” Murphy told the magazine. “It’s something that we’re talking about. I’ve never done Broadway. I’ve always wanted to. Right now, we’re just sort of testing the waters with different people.”
Michele expressed interest in the project in March. “When the time is right and I have had the chance to get some good rest for a while after Glee and I feel ready to do it then definitely we will do it,” she told BroadwayWorld.com.
Unfortunately, it sounds like fans will have to wait for this dream to possibly become a reality. “[Lea] and I have made no mistake of our mutual love for that property, so if it could come together at a time that she’d be willing to make that commitment to go back to Broadway — which I don’t know that she is right now — it would have to be the right director and the right leading man,” Murphy said.
However, Glee will end next season so the timing could be ripe for the actress to head back to the Great White Way. Before her breakthrough role on the Fox series, Michele starred in Broadway productions of Les Misérables, Ragtime, Fiddler on the Roof and Spring Awakening.
