NEW YORK (AP) — Leaders of the soon-to-open Sept. 11 museum are portraying it as a monument to unity and resilience.

Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Wednesday that the National September 11 Memorial & Museum describes how people across the world came together after the attacks. Bloomberg is also the memorial foundation’s chairman, and he says the museum “will keep that spirit of unity alive.”

Still, the museum’s road to completion has been peppered at times with disagreements over its content and message. Bloomberg says that in the end, what matters is whether the right thing was built, and he believes it was.

President Barack Obama is scheduled to attend the museum’s dedication ceremony Thursday. It opens to the public May 21.
