Heavy Rain Leads to Nice Weekend

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) – This afternoon will be cloudy, muggy and breezy with scattered showers and a few downpours. A strong southerly flow, out ahead of a slow moving cold front will funnel  tropical moisture into western Mass and southern New England all the way up from the Gulf.  Temperatures will stay mainly in the 60’s however dew points will stay mainly in the 60’s as well making it feel “summer-like” and humid.

As this slow moving cold front approaches and then moves through western Mass with a period of heavy rain along with a few embedded thunderstorms. We can expect between 1-2″of rain with a few locations over the Berkshires seeing up to 3″.  The heavy rain will likely lead to some ponding on roadways and some minor flooding in areas of poor drainage. In fact a Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for Hampden, Hampshire and Franklin Counties from 5 pm this afternoon through 8 am tomorrow morning. And an Areal Flood Watch remains in effect for Berkshire County from noon today through noon tomorrow. (Flash Flood Watch is more localized and an Ariel Flood Watch is more general and widespread flooding)

As this front moves through it will pick up speed which is great news! This means the rain will end around dawn tomorrow followed by sunshine! So tomorrow is now looking beautiful with sunshine, a dry, westerly breeze, warm temperatures and much lower humidity levels! Highs will reach into the middle 70’s while dew points fall into the 30’s and 40’s! With clear skies, light winds and a dry air mass in place for Saturday night temperatures will cool off quite a bit by Sunday morning. Readings could slip into the upper 30’s in a few locations.

A cool pool of air aloft, (high in the sky) will swing through the northeast on Sunday destabilizing the air mass in the afternoon. This means sunny skies will give way to building late morning and afternoon Cumulus clouds.  However, we’re expecting just a few widely scattered pop-up sprinkles or light showers. In fact, most of us will stay rain free and there will still be some sun mixing in between the clouds.  Overall Sunday will be nice with any outdoor plans going off without a hitch.

This pool of cool air will settle across the northeast for Monday and Tuesday as well so we can expect more of the same, morning sunshine followed by building clouds and spot afternoon shower. Once we lose the heating of the day skies will clear out towards evening. High temperatures Sunday through the middle of the week will reach near 70 or into the low 70’s with overnight lows in the upper 30’s and lower 40’s.

Have a great weekend!
