Possible Tornado Near Albany, NY Thursday Afternoon

As severe thunderstorms ripped across central and eastern New York Thursday, a possible tornado and hail up to 4″ in diameter were reported! Amsterdam, NY which is only about 30 mi. northwest of Albany on I-90, reported the incredibly large hail during the late afternoon hours. The softball-sized hail resulted in blown out and smashed car windshields as well as damage to roofs and the siding of homes.

Just to the south of Amsterdam in the tiny towns of Delanson and Duanesburg, NY there were numerous reports of significant damage to some homes, vehicles, trees and wires consistent with a tornado. Indeed, a tornado warning was issued for this area late Thursday afternoon as a very intense, rotating thunderstorm rolled through.

A National Weather Service storm survey team will investigate the area on Friday to determine if a tornado did hit and to assess the strength of any tornado damage.
