Springfield to Play Host to Outdoor Boxing Match

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Springfield’s best fighters are lacing up the gloves in preparation for an international boxing match next month.

The John Boyle O’Reilly Club in Springfield will host a fight night of amateur matches.

The Irish Amateur International Boxing Team will travel to western Mass. to match up against Olympic hopefuls from around the northeast.

The boxers will take the phrase “take it outside” quite literally as the bouts will take place in an outdoor ring.

“On June 24, you can expect to see some of the greatest fighters on the planet. Fighters from Ireland, fighters from America, and Olympic hopefuls. A young man from Springfield will be fighting in a junior Olympic bout right out here. It will be an excellent day for the community,” says Eric Devine, president of the John Boyle O’Reilly Club.

The fights will take place June 24 outside the John Boyle O’Reilly Club.

When will the retired boxers band together and protest the years of head trauma they suffered causing dementia pugilistica and seek damages like the football players have? Look what happened to Muhammad Ali a.k.a. Cassius Clay.
