Ceremony Held to Honor Retiring Springfield Police Commissioner

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Springfield is honoring its retiring police commissioner Thursday.

Mayor Domenic Sarno, Hampden County Sheriff Michael Ashe, and others gathered to pay tribute to Commissioner William Fitchet at a ceremony Thursday at City Hall.

Fitchet has been a part of the Springfield police force for 41 years, with the last six as Commissioner.

Fitchet’s last day on the job is Friday.

Sarno tapped Deputy Chief John Barbieri, who has been with the department since 1988, as the city’s next police commissioner back in March.
