Penn. Governor Asks US for Help in Philly Transit Strike

Travel-TrainPHILADELPHIA (AP) — Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett is asking President Barack Obama to intervene in the Philadelphia transit strike.

Corbett said Saturday that he asked Obama to appoint an emergency board to mediate the dispute between the Southeast Pennsylvania Transportation Authority and its engineers and electricians unions. They went on strike earlier in the day.

The Republican governor says it’s imperative that management and labor continue negotiating for the benefit of the tens of thousands of commuters in the Philadelphia region who rely on SEPTA’s 13 trains that connect the city and its suburbs.

Assuming the president grants the request, Corbett says union members must return to work and both sides will be required to return to the bargaining table.
