40 Force: Food Drive – Donations to the Gray House
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB)- The Food Bank of Western Mass. distributes 8,000,000 pounds of food a year to different local agencies.
he Gray House is one of those locations. It’s located on Sheldon Street in Springfield’s North End.
Open doors lead to rooms inside where neighbors gather to satisfy social and educational needs.
In the back is the food pantry.
“We were originally seeing 80 families a week until they cut the food stamp program back in the fall. Now we’re seeing over 100 families per week,” says Leyla Kayi, Donor Director at the Gray House.
And up to 75-percent of those they serve are children. In the summer months, they have the greatest need to stock the shelves.
“Kids that are out of school and many of those kids qualify for school lunch and breakfast programs, so if they’re not in school they may not have access to as much support”,” says Kayi.
Leyla says that people tend to give much more through the holidays. The warm season, means that people are occupied taking family vacations, etc.
The Gray House food is part of an emergency pantry which means people are only able to come for a selection four times a year. Most adults who visit have jobs, but are just unable to make ends meet for their family .
