Western Mass. Electric Opens New Solar Plant on Cottage Street
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — WMECo’s third solar facility officially opened in East Springfield Tuesday, making it the company’s newest and largest solar plant.
The plant – which is capable of generating up to 3.9 megawatts of electricity – contains nearly 13,000 solar panels and is part of a program that is said to help the Commonwealth with regards to renewable energy goals, as well as with property tax revenues in our area.
Built into a landfill, the solar energy plant is said to be a good use of space that would otherwise not be used..
“And it’s a good use of land that would be vacant otherwise. It’s an upgrade actually,” explains Craig Hallstrom, President of Western Mass. Electric.
The solar pannels used at this spot are said to produce as much energy as 1,000 gallons of oil.
