Customers and Owner’s Family Talk Student Prince ClosingSPRINGFIELD, Mass (WGGB) — After 79 memorable years in the City of Springfield, The Student Prince is getting ready to close it’s doors. But fortunately for customers it’s just temporary as the owner hands over the keys to a new family.
Heartbreaking, is how many customers are describing the recently announced closing of The Student Prince. A staple in the city for 79 years customers told Abc40 just how long and often they visited the restaurant, remembering the great food and memories the restaurant gave them.
But while many were initially startled, all were relaxed when local business man Peter Picknelly offered to buy the restaurant with a re-opening date expected for September.
Samantha Scherff, daughter of owner Rudi, says she thinks Picknelly will be the best fit to own the restaurant and keeps its authenticity after his close relationship for so many years with the family.
“He comes here all the time and he really cares about it,” Samantha told Abc 40. “I can’t think of a better person to come in and take of it, take care of us and everyone who works here.”
Owner Rudi Scherff will be taking the time to spend more quality time at home with his family as he’s now 68 years old.
Daughter Samantha said she will be happy to see her father relax and not have to field constant phone calls from the restaurant all day long.
“I just hope people, when it reopens, that they realize it is a really important place,” Samantha said. “It”s a landmark and i don’t want people to forget how important this is to the community and really appreciate what they have here and hopefully keep it going for another 79 years.”
