Westfield Police: Man Stole Cigarettes Because He Wanted to be Arrested

WESTFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Westfield Police have arrested a man who they say stole a pack of cigarettes because he wanted to go back to jail.

Westfield Police Capt. Hipolito Nunez says that 40-year-old John Kirwan of Springfield went into the Cumberland Farms on Main Street around 8:20 p.m. Tuesday and asked for a pack of cigarettes.

Nunez adds that the employee went to hand the cigarettes over to Kirwan when he allegedly pulled them out of the employee’s hand and fled out of the store without paying for them.

Officers responded and found Kirwan a short time later at a bus stop, at which time, Kirwan reportedly admitted to stealing the cigarettes.

Nunez explains that Kirwan told investigators that he was on probation and wanted to be arrested.

Kirwan is facing a charge of shoplifting and is expected to be arraigned Wednesday in Westfield District Court.
