East Longmeadow Gas Leak Forces Evacuations

Gas leak

EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WGGB) — A gas leak in East Longmeadow forced evacuations in the area midday Friday.

Columbia Gas spokesperson Andrew Luppi said, according to the East Longmeadow Dept. of Public Works, an independent contractor hit a gas line near Elm Street around 10 a.m. Friday.

Fire officials said that 15 people were evacuated from eight nearby homes as a precaution.

Just before 1 p.m., the gas was shut off and the crews were able to get into the site to begin repairs.

Repairs were completed about an hour later and residents were allowed back into their homes.

Columbia Gas said about 159 customers had their service shut-off because of the leak.

The company worked to fix the problem throughout the afternoon Friday. Elm Street has since been reopened to traffic.

No injuries were reported.
