TV Test-Bark Genie
SPRINGFIELD- Sometimes the dull roar of a barking dog is deafening. There are times when dog owners wish their beloved four-legged friends would just chill.
That’s where the First Alert Bark Genie comes in. It claims to quiet that bark with the push of a button. Jessecah Gower at TJ O’Connor agreed to put it to the test.
“It’s supposed to stop the dogs from barking. how would it do that? What I’m thinking it does is a distraction for the dogs so it emits a noise.
So off to the dogs we went. Meet Milo. Milo is not shy about being vocal.
“Milo barks a lot…you always bark at me! Now you’re not going to bark at me. There we go…it appears to work!”
Once the button is released, the ultrasonic sound disappears. The novelty quickly wore off for Milo and he went back to his old ways. But Jessecah points out that if a dog isn’t responding to the ultrasound, there could be another reason.
“These dogs are afraid of the camera. I think in our setting here its a temporary distraction but the camera is still they are fearful. I think in our setting here it’s a temporary distraction but with the camera they are still fearful.”
Jessecah says in a different setting, the Bark Genie could be a quick way to quietness. At the adoption center, sometimes it’s just back to basics.
“What we do sometimes is make noises our ourselves like beep and they shut up and just to get their attention for a moment. So I mean, the science behind it seems sound.”
