Fight Club Is Getting a Comic Book Sequel
The Dark Horse series, illustrated by Cameron Stewart, will pick up a decade after the ending of the original 1996 book and film, which starred Edward Norton and Brad Pitt. Fight Club 2 will take place in both the future and past, with the unnamed narrator married to Marla Singer and raising their 9-year-old son Junior.
The comics will feature most of the characters from the book as well as Project Mayhem, the anarchic organization which still wields influence over the narrator as he tries to save Junior’s life. Fight Club 2 will also explain the true origins of Tyler Durden, who turns out to be more than the narrator’s embodied id. “Tyler is something that maybe has been around for centuries and is not just this aberration that’s popped into his mind,” Palahniuk said.
In the 20 years since Fight Club was published, Palahniuk’s explained that his perspective on the themes, particularly regarding fatherhood, have shifted. The first book was “such a tirade against fathers — everything I had thought my father had not done combined with everything my peers were griping about their fathers,” Palahniuk, 52, said. “Now to find myself at the age that my father was when I was trashing him made me want to revisit it from the father’s perspective and see if things were any better and why it repeats like that.”
In the sequel, the narrator will be going through his own middle age crisis. “You’re still not really happy but for different reasons. Also the idea that if you suppress that wild, creative part of you — that Tyler part of you — do you lose the best part of you? Sure, your life is more stable and safe, but is it a better life?” Palahniuk said.
However, though the narrator has moved on from fight club, the comics will find him revisiting the hobby once to disastrous results. “He tries to go back and reclaim that phase of his life, and is just a pathetic failure,” Palahniuk said. “He’s not that person anymore. But beyond that, it’s what the organization has grown into in his absence and what he’s pulled back into.”
