Showers and Thunderstorms Will Bring Relief from Heat and Humidity

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Highs made it into the lower 90s across the Pioneer Valley today with “feels like” temperatures nearing 100° in the afternoon. An approaching cold front is sparking off showers and thunderstorms this evening. The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 10pm this evening for the possibility of strong to severe thunderstorms with damaging winds, small hail, frequent cloud to ground lightning, and heavy downpours.

The threat for severe weather should diminish before 10pm after the heating of the day is lost. Overnight, a few showers will linger as the cold front slowly approaches from the north and west. It will be a mild and muggy night with lows in the middle and upper 60s. The front will clear the area tomorrow morning, which means it will be a gloomy start with a few lingering showers. However, the afternoon will be much improved with mostly sunny skies and much less humid conditions. Highs will make it into the upper 70s and lower 80s with a breeze from the N/NW at 5-15 mph.

Friday will be a fabulous close to the workweek with mostly sunny skies. It’ll be comfortable with highs in the middle 80s. Saturday starts out nice, but clouds will increase in the afternoon and there could be a shower or thunderstorm with highs in the middle 80s.

The forecast become much less certain for late weekend into early next week as a large dip in the jet stream will make for some unsettled weather. Sunday will be mostly cloudy and humid with the chance for showers and thunderstorms, and Monday will feature much of the same weather. It does appear that drier conditions work in for the middle part of next week.
