WESTFIELD, Mass. (WGGB)- It’s tough to enjoy time in the backyard this summer with mosquitos all around. But there are ways to keep your yard mosquito free this summer.

You can spray yourself with mosquito repellent, or take it even one step further, spray your land. There are store bought products available or you can hire a professional service.

“Basically it’s a leaf blower, but it has this 4.5 gallon tank in the back, which we pour the ingredients into the top,” says Nick Catjakis, Mosquito Shield employee.

“99.97% natural, which is very safe for pets and for children in yards,” explains Steve Sutton, owner of Western Mass Mosquito Shield.

The product is made of up of different spices, and they say it has a garlicky floral scent. To apply, workers spray the perimeter of the household and try to cover as much foliage as possible.

“If the mosquito lands on the foliage it will get to the mosquito’s wing and kill the mosquito,” explains Sutton.

Western Mass. Mosquito Shield has treated over 200 homes. Crews go every 2 weeks to keep up the property.

One thing you can do on your own to keep the mosquitos out is remove breeding grounds from your yard. For example, water sitting on top of the pool deck, other puddles that don’t dry out, flowerpots with excess water, kiddie pools, and bird baths.

Keeping the unwanted pests out will make invited guests to your home, very happy and comfortable this summer.
