Scrabble to Add 5,000 Words, Including ‘Selfie’ and ‘Bling’

Screen Shot 2014-08-05 at 10.08.08 AM(CNN) — “Hashtag,” “Selfie,” “Geocache.” Those are just a few of the new words that will appear in the new edition of Scrabble’s official dictionary.

Publisher Merriam-Webster says the fifth edition of the game’s dictionary includes 5,000 new words.

It’s the first new edition in nearly a decade.

Other new words include “Emo,” “Bling,” “Mixtape” and “Beatbox.”

The co-president of the north american scrabble players association said the additions “go a long way toward bringing us closer to the language as it is currently spoken.”

Other improvements include words and spellings used by Canadian and British speakers of English.

The dictionary goes on sale Wednesday.
