COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Gary Williams will be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Friday.

It is an achievement he does not take lightly.

The 69-year-old Williams says winning the national championship at Maryland in 2002 and getting into the Hall of Fame are the “highlights of my career.”

Williams enjoyed coaching success at the high school level in his native New Jersey and guided teams at American University, Boston College and Ohio State before returning to his alma mater, Maryland, in 1989.

He spent 22 seasons at Maryland, where he became the winningest coach in the history of the program. Williams’ frenzied approach on the sideline often left his white shirt, tie and suit completely soaked in sweat — a testament to his unyielding work ethic.
