AMHERST, Mass. (WGGB) — Investigators have determined the cause of a weekend fire that displaced approximately three dozen families in Amherst

Late Saturday afternoon, fire broke out at Building 97 of the Southpoint Apartments on East Hadley Road.

Amherst Fire Chief Tim Nelson says that investigators found that a tenant in a third floor apartment left a pot on the stove and forgot to turn the appliance off before leaving the unit for the day. He adds that the fire then started, went up into the walls, then into the ceiling.

Nelson adds that the fire has been ruled an accident.

The Red Cross is assisting those displaced. The complex’s rental office is also providing residents with temporary apartments in the complex.
